Like a God Among (Wo)Men

Which god are you? Discuss how are like one of the gods we have read about. If you don't see yourself as possessing any of the traits of a particular god, which one would you most like to be?

  1. Honestly, I do not see myself as having the qualities fit for a god or goddess. However, if I could choose to be one, I would choose Athena. Athena was regarded as the goddess of arts, agriculture, crafts, war, as well as wisdom. She was the favorite child of Zeus, to whom she was born. She was the only child allowed to use his shield. Also, Athena was the patron of the Greek city of Athens. She also was a great and fierce warrior. Athena seems like a model goddess, and based on what I know about her, I would most like to be her.

  2. I believe I can be best associated with the Greek god Hephaestus. According to Homer, the gods appreciate Hephaestus for his skill as a craftsman, rather than his beauty. Likewise, I feel I can bee better appreciated for my skills, rather than my beauty. Hephaestus can also be seen as a personification of the idea that function supersedes form by being an ugly god that can be very useful when one needs a strong weapon. I share this viewpoint and believe that one should focus resources on being more functional than beautiful.

  3. The god I am most like and would choose to be is Apollo. He is the god of truth, a lie never passes through his lips, and I do my best to lie as least as possible. I would like everyone to trust me, just like the Greeks always had faith in Apollo’s oracles at Delphi. He has many positive qualities, like being a master musician and the god of archery. I consider myself to be athletic, and I would certainly love to be a great musician. His name, “Phoebus”, means shining or brilliant, so he is also sometimes called the sun god. It would be a great honor to be the god of the sun, the sun being so crucial to human life. Apollo is the link between gods and men, trying to help men make peace with the gods and purify guilty humans. I also try to act as a mediator when two of my friends or family members quarrel, and I try to act as fairly as possible, like Apollo. One of his favorite animals was the dolphin, which is one of my favorites as well.

  4. I believe I am most like the God Prometheus. Prometheus is a Titan and is the wisest God of them all. His name means forethought, because he is believed to be able to see the future. I believe I am comparable to him because I always thing before I act. I always think about how the choices I make will affect the future, alike the way Prometheus does. Yet, if I could chose to be any God, I would want to be the God Zeus, because he is almighty and powerful in the eyes of many. He is the strongest one of his brothers and he is also the ruler of the sky. If I could control the sky, I would be able to chose the weather for the day and also make some of the choices on how the earth runs. I would also like the opportunity to use Zeus’s lightning bolts. He would use his lightning bolts to strike down his opponents. Having the lightning swords would be very beneficial.

  5. Although I do not see myself as possessing the traits of a particular god, the one I aspire to the most is Athena. Unlike many of the other gods who are temperamental, Athena’s wisdom allows her to make just and smart decisions. For instance, when Orestes was tried by the gods for his mother’s murder, Athena was appointed as judge because she was trusted to make a fair trial. Athena’s extraordinary intelligence makes her an icon of righteousness and reason.

Athena is also a goddess of war because she was born from Zeus’ head in full armor. However, she is only warlike when defending, “…the home from outside enemies…”(29). I admire Athena’s insight into war because she only supports defensive battle. Unlike Ares, a temperamental god who loves all forms of war, Athena only resorts to violence when it is absolutely necessary. Her wisdom and use of reason over emotion make her unique and admirable amongst the gods.

  6. In my opinion, I do not relate to any particular god in Greek mythology. However, if I had the choice to be a god, I would choose Poseidon. Poseidon, because he is the God of the Sea, is very influential and possesses great power and ability. He can create deadly storms or calm the ocean any time he wants. Poseidon also wields the mighty trident, which he can use to control the seas and shake the Earth. If I were as powerful as Poseidon, nobody would ever disagree with me because I would possess awesome power. I would truly enjoy living a life without much hardship and strife. Moreover, Poseidon creates the horse, which is one of the greatest animals known to man. The horse allowed man to travel before technology, and to this day horses are used in our everyday lives. I would love to be remembered for some sort of creation, especially one as significant as the horse. Poseidon would be my choice of a god because of his many great abilities and characteristics.

  7. I feel that the God I am most like is Eros, or Cupid. Cupid is a better name to call him because it is a more well known name. I think I am most like Cupid because I am all about love. Love and I go together like salt and water. Also, my sources tell me that Cupid was a pretty handsome guy, and I feel that I share that trait with him. Also, we share common traits in other categories as well, such as personality. Cupid always does what his mother, Persephone, tells him to. I am obedient to my parents as well. Also, when Cupid was letting Psyche stay at his home, he was afraid to let her see his face. I too am afraid to show myself around women. The only difference between us is that Cupid can make others fall in love. I wish I could do that.

  8. I believe, out of all the Greek gods, I am most like Hermes. Hermes is very clever, something that I strive to emulate. Also, he is the protector of markets and commerce, subjects that interest me greatly. Additionally, through his invention of the lire, Hermes has a connection with music, as do I. In the story of Perseus, Hermes helps those in need, which I also try to do. The one characteristic of Hermes which I lack is grace, but I can always hope.

  9. While I am not like any particular god or goddess, the one I strive to be like is Apollo. Apollo is the god of truth and light and is also associated with prophecies, medicine, and music. Truth is important for every relationship and I hope that while I may not always be perfect, I am able to avoid lies and remain truthful as Apollo does. Along with truth, Apollo is the god of prophecies and is there for all other gods when in need of advice or guidance. I feel as if I assist my friends through their problems as well as listen to them in times of need. Not only do I listen to what they have to say, I try to help them heal after difficult situations just as Apollo is the god of medicine. Lastly, music is a major aspect of my life and Apollo’s life considering he was commonly referenced to music. Although I am not very skilled at playing instruments, I would love to be able to play. I do not believe I am currently like Apollo but we have our similarities and in the future I hope to grow and achieve the qualities he possesses.

  10. I think the god I remind myself most of is Zeus. He is incredibly powerful and the king of the gods. He uses his deadly thunderbolts to bring justice to the universe he rules. I am powerful like Zeus and I am a good leader. I also belive in justice for everyone. He associates himself with bulls and so do I because I am tenacious and never give up.

  11. If I were to be a Greek god, I would be the all mighty Zeus. As it is said in Greek mythology, Zeus is the god of gods, the mightiest of mighty, he is the boss. Like me of course, I am the mightiest of mightiest, as everyone knows. I have great power , not magical, like how Zeus can shoot lightning from the tips of his finger. I don't have the power of shooting lightning but I do have the powers of just "magically" waking up good-looking everyday. Also as we know Zeus "gets the ladies," as i also do. Maybe Zeus and I were once great friends in my past life.

  12. Although I do not remind myself of any god or goddess specifically, I aspire to be Hermes. Hermes is the miraculous messenger with swift wings on his heel and a unique short cloak which symbolize swift delivery. Hermes is considered very helpful, which I want to be. Zeus made his son Hermes, the god of commerce additionally to a messenger. I think trading and dealing with business is a fascinating potential career. Also, Hermes is sometimes referred to as the giver of dreams, which is very interesting, peaceful, and iconic, because dreams lead to goals, which lead to successes. Also, Hermes invented many musical devices, music is very soothing along with dreams. Therefore, I aspire to possess Hermes’s desirable traits because he seems peaceful, mystical, helpful, and interesting.

  13. While I am not exactly like one of the Greek gods or goddess, the goddess that I strive to be is Athena. As Athena is the goddess of wisdom, she is very clever and witty. Additionally, the decisions that Athena makes are fair and compassionate, resulting in her being appointed as a judge for Orestes’ trial after he kills Clytemnestra to avenge his father, Agamemnon. I aspire to have the cleverness of Athena to be able to make sound and righteous decisions that enable me to successfully move forward in life. Also, I want to be as fair as Athena is and be unbiased in my opinions and decisions. Furthermore, Athena is the goddess of war; she is born from Zeus’ head, fully grown and dressed in armor. While Athena is the goddess of war, she is not an advocate of violence, instead she tries to keep peace. However, Athena will partake in war when necessary. Similar to Athena, I do not believe in violence or starting wars, as I would prefer there to be peace and serenity in the world. Overall, I hope to someday be the emulation of the admirable qualities of Athena.

  14. There are many admirable gods and goddesses throughout Greek mythology. The god that I most aspire to be like is Apollo, the god of Light and Truth. In my opinion, a person’s honesty has an important impact on how others view him or her. A person that frequently deceits others with lies is not a noble human being, and therefore not worthy of respect. Because Apollo is the god of Truth, the idea that he is an honest and upright person is implied, and is a quality that I hope to always possess. Also, being the god of Light, Apollo brings clarity and brightness to life on earth, which, in my opinion, is a very admirable trait. I would love to brighten the earth with radiance like Apollo does, making it a pleasant place to live.
Apollo is also the master of Music and Poetry. I, being a diligent piano player, am inspired by his mastery in the art of music. If I were like Apollo, I would most likely be as strong of a musician as he is, which is a quality that I hope to possess over time. Overall, I admire Apollo’s truthfulness, his ability to lighten the world, and his mastery of music. He is a god who I definitely aspire to be like.

  15. I do not see myself as possessing the traits of a particular god or goddess, but I would most like to be Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. She is depicted as being very beautiful, and I like to think that I have that same quality. Also, Aphrodite is the goddess of love, and I think love is a wonderful gift. The experience of love keeps people happy and gives them someone to share everything with. In addition, Aphrodite is associated with the arts. Art is very important and allows people to express their feelings. I have artistic talents and enjoy art, which also relates me to Aphrodite.

  16. I do not believe that I hold any of the characteristics fitting to be a goddess. If I could choose, however, I would choose to be the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the goddess of the arts, love and beauty. The arts are very influential and help people to express their feelings through different techniques than talking. The arts are usually warm and inviting and I would hope to possess those qualities. Love is also an important characteristic to have. Loving people are liked by all and are very nurturing. Love is also sometimes hard to find and if I was the goddess of it, I know I would always be able to find love. Beauty, although not the most important characteristic, is one I wish to obtain. Being beautiful is everyone’s wish and no one wish’s to be ugly. If one is beautiful, some may think love comes easily. I wish I could be like the Greek goddess Aphrodite.

  17. Though I do not view myself as possessing the same set of traits as any of the gods or goddesses, I will strive to be like Athena. The favourite daughter of Zeus, Athena is loved and praised by many; I, too, would like to be praised by many in ancient Grecian times. This goddess is most commonly associated with war, cleverness, and her wit. Additionally, Athena is said to have been courageous, which is a trait I strive to acquire. In the end, Athena is made the goddess of wisdom, reason, and purity.
The main reason why I would like to resemble Athena is because of her power, yet modesty about it; living on Olympus and being put on a pedestal would bring responsibility and power, and Athena handles both very well, given the tasks she is handed.

  18. If I were one of the gods or goddesses in Greek mythology I would be Zeus. Zeus is the god of all gods and rules the whole world. I am like Zeus because I like to have complete control of the situation I am in. Zeus is also famous for placing harsh punishments on people who have done wrong. I am like this also because when someone does something wrong to me like one of my siblings I like to see that they see a punishment. Zeus also seems to be liked by all the gods and the people. I am like this because I am nice to people and have many friends. I am similar to the Greek god, Zeus.

  19. I relate to Poseidon, lord of the sea, because like Poseidon I am powerful . However I do no partake in being a leader like Zeus as he is of the other gods. Poseidon, like me, is strong but does not always get recognition for his accomplishments. He was able to shake and shatter the Earth and then in one second turn everything peaceful and quiet. I believe I am most like Poseidon because we are both strong, but do not care to be in control of others like Zeus. I do not mind not being able to order others around because I make up for it by my good talents and strengths like Poseidon. Like Poseidon, there are times when I can get extremely angry and feel like shaking and shattering the Earth. I also have the power to calm myself down quickly in the same manner that Poseidon has the power to calm the waters of the world with a snap of his fingers. The combination of these two opposite traits can work well when used together. There is strength in anger if it is controlled by its’ owner. My strength has helped me to overcome opponents in athletics but my ability to keep anger in check and leave it behind enables me to move on from struggles that I face. -John Potter Furey

  20. I do not think that I possess the traits of one particular god or goddess, but I would most like to have the traits of Artemis. Artemis is physically strong, independent, and a protector of the weak. First, I wish that I could be as compassionate about the less fortunate as Artemis. She protects the wild animals of the forest, and punishes anyone who mistreats them. I, on the other hand, am unfortunatley too self-centered. I only occasionally reach out to help others, and then it is usually only to my own friends. I have realized that my ways are erroneous, and continue to try to change. Second, I do not admire being thinness; I admire being physically healthy and athletic. Artemis is clearly athletic because she is a huntress, and runs through the forest. I try to eat right and exercise, but have not achieved all of my athletic goals. Third, Artemis is extremely independent. She does not need to rely on anyone to do anything for her because she is skilled and self-sufficient. I often resent the strong dependence I have on my parents for the basic nessecities as well as assistance, information, and advice. I have also started to believe that I rely too much on friends for some of the same things. Clearly, I admire many of Artemis's traits, and strive to emulate those same traits within myself.

  21. Although I do not see myself as a person that can relate to the gods in Greek mythology, the goddess I would most like to be is Athena. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and she is a very intellectual person. Athena is a strong, independent woman who is extremely determined to do what she feels is right. Not only is she the goddess of wisdom but she is also known as the protector of the city. Her bravery in battle is inspiring and I would most like to be her if I was given a choice.

  22. Since I do not think I posess any of the traits of a particular god or goddess, I would most like to be Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. This makes her a very beautiful and of great importance. She was even chosen over Hera and Athena for being the most beautiful. I would also not be judged like Eros/Cupid for forcing the wrong people to love eachother. If I had my choice, I would simply just be the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite.

  23. I do not see myself as any one of the Greek gods in particular but if I were to choose one to be I would be Apollo. Apollo was the god of music healing, educational interests and sometimes the sun. Apollo was also into poetry. Apollo has many talents and this makes him well rounded. Apollo is so good at playing songs on his lyre this is how I wish I could be. I love songs and making music. Apollo is also the god of healing and he helps people get therough their illness. I like to help people in any way that I can and that means getting through their illness. Lastly, Apollo was said to be the god of the sun and during the summer I love when the siun is shining and I can lay on the beach. Even though I do not see myself as one of the Greek god if I had to choose one to be I would want tyo be Apollo.
