Blog #5 (10/15)

What did this text teach you about the subject? What did it teach you about yourself? Did it teach you anything about reading?

  1. Things Fall apart taught me that trying to impose one's ideals on people who believe differently, is wrong. It is important to know all different aspects of how people view the world. Every culture has a different way that they view religion and domestic customs, and rather than imposing one's own views on them, people could teach each other their ways, and find a happy medium between the two with their new found education. Reading this book has taught me that even though I don't personally see these types of things in my life, like a specific group of people telling other people they're wrong for doing what their doing and it needs to be changed, that it still does occur and it can destroy an entire culture.

Reading this also taught me to pay attention to little details when reading, if you don't you may miss something that leads to confusion later down the line in the reading which will show when you go to test on it and can't remember why something was the way it was.

  2. Readin this book has taught me about how colonialism is viewed by the different sides. I had never really thought about it much from either side simply because one does not hear about it often nowadays. I did not realize how much it could change a culture. We are used to thinking about cultural differences mainly between say the U.S. and France or Italy which would be mainly small and relatively insignificant differences. This book showed what a drastic difference can be like.

  3. After reading this story and reflecting back on it, I realized that it taught me many new things. This book really has a lot to offer on how different cultures can clash with one another when put into the wrong situation. For instance, when the missionaries come over to Umuofia, part of the clan takes offense and rebel against the others, tearing their clan apart, and ultimately leading to the death of Okonkwo. This story also taught me to respect the thoughts and customs of others, because in the story each clan has their own way of doing things, and when they cannot learn to be civil to one another it causes war and violence. After reading this story, I also realized that this does apply to my life in some way. I learned that it is not fair to treat others the way that these opposing tribes did, and that everyone deserves to be treated equally. This book did teach me a few things about reading as well. It taught me to pay attention to underlying themes, like ones in this story. It also taught me to pay closer attention to the minor details of stories, because, they all contribute to the main point, and if you do not understand them, the book will seem very confusing.

  4. This book, Things Fall Apart, has taught me that every culture has its different ideas and beliefs. Also some cultures may believe in certain things that other cultures do not believe in, but we must learn to respect one another's beliefs and accept difference. This book has taught me an important lesson. I have learned that no matter what, everyone is different and that i should not make judgements. I know that in life there will be people that I am not going to agree with but I must learn to accept them as individuals and focus on their good qualities rather than judging them for what I don't agree with them on.

While reading this book, i have learned that when I read, in some books there may be names of characters that are very difficult for me to pronounce or spell but that I shouldn't complain about them and work on memorizing and learning them.

  5. Things Fall Apart taught me that it is worng to try and change the way that other people and cultures live their lives. weather or not i agree with it, it is their own choice and must be respected. This book taught me to always stand up for what i believe in and that it is okay to be different. I was taught to really look within myself when searching for an answer and to never loose hope in my future endevours. In regaurds to reading, i learned to really pay attention to little details. This book produced so many little names of people and villeges and just items that are so different from my life. Trying to remember details like these may be tough but it can be done to better understand a book and help you connect to it more.

  6. The novel, Things Fall Apart, taught me that religions and cultures are very different from how they are in America. It taught me that we should not judge and think what they are doing is wrong if it is part of their traditions. We should respect other cultures because it could lead to war if they cannot be civil in respecting each others religion. This book also taught me to pay more attention to my own culture. I realized that our culture is so much different from Umuofia and I am proud that our culture does not involve more than one wife and men that beat their wives. In Umuofia's customs it is okay to have more than one wife and their is not a law against beating your wives and I now respect their culture and traditions after reading this book.

  7. This novel gave me a new perspective towards the concept of change. When the villagers have change thrust upon them they are overwhelmed and confused. They fear that the presence of this new religion will also bring about new ways of life. Eventually their fears become reality and the new religion thrives amoung the village. This situation helped me see that although i do not agree with what the missionaries did, it did help the villagers of Umuofia obtain a better quality of life. They now had oppourtunites they never would have had before. Knowing this I think that when given the CHOICE to change for the better I would take it. It helps reveal both the positive and negative affects of change. This book also taught me to read books more closely. Although it may just look like a simple story when you really think about it, it is an extremely influencial novel about deterioating traditions and converting occuring in African societies. It also displays the affects the tradition may have on certain people

  8. Things Fall Apart taught me that all cultures are different and that each country and village has a different way of living. The Ibo culture and the missionaries are two completely different groups of people that cannot peacefully coexist. Everyone is different, but all cultures do not clash just ones that are not accepting of other people. Something this book has taught me about myself is that I need to be accepting and open to new things. Being closed minded can be very detrimental to society and lead to a society’s downfall. So being open and accepting leads to a great upbringing. Things Fall Apart taught me that it is very important to be able to read and write. Because without these necessary skills you will not be able to defend yourself in the real world.

  9. In Things Fall Apart, I learned how colonialism has two different viewpoints. The missionaries want to colonize Umuofia. They believe rhat their religion and ways are better so they should be spread to other people. However, the people from the clan view it as opposite. They do not want their ways or religion changed. The colonists sadly break up the Ibo culture. This novel has taught me to think twice before imposing my ideas on someone else. I should not try to change anyone or their ways because they may not respect my decision.

  10. After reading this novel I learned how different parts of the world have their own cultures and live differently. I also learned that change can be a good thing if you have a positive outlook on things.

  11. After reading this book I am truly greatly not living in a time where basically socitey has been flipped. Men legit being over bearing and way too controling in socitey, and where a man;s wealth is solely determined how many wives and children he has. Also how White people(colonists) came and converting all of Umuofia and the nearby villages into Christianity, by force. this was wrong and even though the colonists thought they may have been doing the right things in their eyes, in the villagers eyes they were doing the wrong thing, by basically annihlating all of their tradition and forcing them to learn about one God.

  12. This text showed the ignorance of the Christian invasion across the world. Through history classes I always heard about these missionaries converting people, but i never thought of the other culture's way of life or how they felt to be completely taken over and overruled about the way they live. This story helped put a face to those different cultures. The way a village turned against one another and inveeitably gave up its own beliefs because strangers told them to. This story also helped show the lack of knowledge i have about this past. I always believed that although history might be bad I never actually imagined the pain people must have goone through. This story is a good example of how a piece of literatuyre can transport a person to the setting and help the reader become really emotionally involved with characters.

  13. After reading the novel revealed to me a universal truth. No matter where you are in the world there will always be another group of people who wish to completely change you. The thought being you are unable to properly live your lives and with their help and change you will be "better off" then before. In regards to myself it taught me to never change and always fight for what you believe in since that is the most important.

    zack :]
