Haroun and the Sea of Stories

please discuss your second blog assignment provided to you on the reading schedule sheet. You should also comment on how much you wish that I were there teaching you today instead of having a substitute. I miss you all terribly, and I can't wait to hear all of the impressive comments you have prepared for your seminar discussion THURSDAY! Rise my people...rise!

  1. One of my favorite imaginary figures, that I believed was real at one point in my life was, Santa Claus. Just as every child believed at some point, I thought he brought all the Christmas presents down the chimney, and put them under the tree. When I actually found out that he was not a real person, I was quite upset. I always wished he were real and never actually let go of my hope that, someday, I would see him, but that hasn't happened yet. Another imaginary figure that I believed in at on point in my life was the tooth fairy. Whenever I lost a tooth I would put it under my pillow and receive money for it. The older I got, I finally realized that my parents were the ones putting money there, and not the tooth fairy. These are just a few imaginary figures that, at one time, I believed in and did not want to let go of the hope that they could still have existed.

  2. My most beloved and cherished made up character is Santa Claus. To me he is the ideal children's idol he brings toys to all children and is always Jolly. Although i found out he is not real apart of me will always wonder if he is or not, but to me he is always real aslong as he is able bring joy to the world and presents to children. Another favorite character of would have to be genie from Aladdin this character is one of the most interesting characters and his power to grant three wishes since a child i have been trying to find that magical lamp that no one has been able to find in order to have him grant my three wishes. Also, tomorrow in class will be Extremly different from when your there and it should be interesting to see how it turns out! Hope you are or had fun at the writing confrence

  3. My favorite imaginary character Iff the Water Genie because I wish that he could take me to the sea of stories. I keep thinking that if I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom frequently enough, I will find the little bugger with his disconnecting tool. He probably thinks that I don't deserve to tell stories anymore because I don't believe that kids care about books, reading, story-telling. Like Haroun, I've been guilty of asking, "what's the point of stories that aren't even true?" It's stories like this one, though, that remind me of the power to move people through stories. We have the gift of being able to share not only our experiences with each other but our imaginations too! We can share our joys and our disappointments, our hopes and our dreams. Because we are so moved by the imaginations of others, each of us has at one point believed in something that we can't see. We've taken the leap of faith needed to make mishes and hope that they will come true, and that is what makes being human such an incredible gift.

  4. As a child, I was a strong believer in the Easter Bunny. It was so amazing for me to think that every year a big fluffy bunny would hop into my house and deliver me loads and loads of candy. It was so real to me when I would leave out carrots for the bunny the night before and find little bits of carrot all around the house. Another imaginary figure that i used to believe in is Santa Clause. Every year before Christmas time i would think about Santa and how hard he and his elves must have been working to make toys for all the children of the world. The thought of Santa coming down my chimney to deliver me presents was astounding. These imaginary characters were so real to me that it was difficult to grow up and grow apart from them. I often wish that I still believe in them because I think that the holidays were so much more fun when I believed that Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny were on their way to my house.
Have fun at the writing conference, Ms. Soderquist! Having a substitute is great...but not as great as your teaching! :)

  5. Thanks Amanda and Robert for recognizing my absence. I wish I were at a writing conference. I am on the NEASC reaccrediation team for a high school in MA. They are going through the process that LHS will go through in November 2011, so I'm here to learn how we can make our school better! I wish I were at school.

  6. jay godding-

One of my favorite imaginary characters is of course santa claus. Its the highlight of almost every kids year when they come down dtairs on christmas morning to find a livingroom full of presents delivered in the night by a magical man and his reindeer. Even though i now know he is not real, the memory of him was a special time in my childhood. another character i belived in was the easter bunny. Whats better to a kid than a magic bunny hiding candy eggs? I can remember putting carrots out for him the night before and my parents breaking them in half to create the illusion that he had eaten them. Although neither of these characters turned out to be real, they weere and are important because of the joy they bring to children everywhere.

  7. My favorite imaginary character that I had is Santa Clause. Even though I never truly believed in him, I still appreciated what her represented. Santa Clause brings joy and happiness to those who believe in him, and gives those a chance who do not get much to receive donations. The idea that he comes in the middle of the night and brings presents to those who are goods boys and girls, make boys and girls want to be good during the year in order to receive presents and not coal in their stockings. Santa Clause does not represent what Christmas is about really though. People could think that Santa Clause could be the shepherds who brought presents to Mary and Joseph when Jesus was born, but I believe this holiday and character was made up for sale value in the marketing world.

  8. My favorite imaginary character as a kid was the tooth fairy. Many kids used to hate having their teeth pulled or having you tooth hanging from that last strand, but I was so excited to finally lose my teeth. I would run and tell my parents and ask them if the tooth fairy was coming and they said, "yes of course." This is my favorite imaginary character as a child because I loved getting money. I remember when my last tooth fell out I got 5 dollars! Getting money from anyone was in my opinion, the best gift because I could buy anything I wanted with that money. The tooth fairy gave children something to look forward to after the pain from the tooth was throbbing. The tooth fairy brought joy to many children in a negative situation, that is why the tooth fairy is my favorite imaginary character.

  9. An imaginary figure that I wish I still believed in today would be Santa Clause. Christmas was always my favorite holiday and I would always love to leave milk and cookie for Santa and look forward to what presents he would leave under my tree. I always loved Santa Clause and everything he stood for; even after I stopped believing in Santa I still appreciated him. Children look up to him and everything he does for them, Santa instills hope and love into the children for a bright future. I wish I still believed in Santa and his legacy, what he does for the children around the world amazes me.

  10. my favorite imaginary character when I was younger was The Tooth Fairy. I loved the tooth fairy because every time you lost a tooth you'd get a dollar underneath your bed! When I lost my last baby tooth I got 5 dollars! it was awesome! but my sister told me the next morning that it was really her the entire time I lost my teeth that she put the money under my pillow.

  11. My favorite imaginary figure is Santa Claus. Growing up, I was always very excited for Christmas because Santa Claus would be coming. I would always think about a way that I could get to the North Pole so that I could go visit him. However, when I found out that Santa Claus was only imaginary, I was really upset. I never thought that Christmas would be the same. But, when I see other little kids excited for the arrival of Santa it makes me realize how important imaginary figures are and the excitement and wonder they instill in young children

  12. It is true for me too, that Santa Clause was an imaginary figure that i once did believe in. The reason I was usually excited for christmas was because I got to bake cookies for sanata! Then, miraculously in the morning, they'd be gone! This was mind-blowing to me and it mademy faith in him very strong. However, over the years I found out that it was not Santa eating the cookies. This disappointed me very much. The strong beliefe and excitement that i had for Santa Clause's arrival was all a lie! However, i do still believe there is a Santa Clause at times ... we don't know for sure!

  13. My favorite imaginary character is Dorian Gray, a demi god in his own right since has acheived immortality. I would spend hours discussing with him how having such an ability would have lead to the countless immoral choices he has made. Even if he isn't that interesting as a fantasy character.
    zack :]
    Late but hey I tried

  14. One of my favorite imaginary figures is Santa. When I found out he was not real I didn’t want to believe it. Along with Santa, other imaginary figures like the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny always kept me excited. During the holidays, the Easter bunny and Santa would make each holiday fun. Writing a letter to Santa and leaving cookies was my favorite part of Christmas and when I found out he wasn’t real I was disappointed.

Hope you are having fun at your writing conference!

  15. An imaginary person that I used to believe exist would be Santa Clause. Many people would say the same. However, my reason for saying Santa is because the thought of one person being able to bring gifts around the world to every child he believe was nice was amazing. It was almost as if he was god, since he knew every child so to say and had list telling whether they were naughty or nice. Believing in Santa Clause or any imaginary figure for that matter is a stage of innocence.

  16. my favorite imaginary character that i used to believe in was yes what a suprise santa clause. once december hit all children start behaving in hope of recieving every little gift their heart desires. it was amazing to me how one man could travel the whole world in one night delivering the most favorable gifts to every single child.believing in santa was fun and gave every child something to look forward to around the winter months.Upon leaaring he wasnt real, you can imagine i was sad though it wasnt very much of a suprsie. However, i will always hope one day to see a big fat man dressed in red on my roof with his reindeer ready to bobsled down my chimeny in the dead of winter.

  17. During my childhood my favorite imaginary character is that of Santa. After Thanksgiving all I could think about was Christmas. As a child I can remember leaving Santa cookies out incase he was getting hungry brining in all the presents to everyone. When I found out Santa wasn't even real I didn't know what to think about the holiday anymore. Then I realized that its not only Santa that brings in the holiday spirit. Christmas is all about joy and family. When presents are exchanged its a show of care for eachother not the whole idea of spending money, its the thought. I realized that Santa didnt bring the joy or family, it was eachother and the way we treated eachother.

  18. My favorite imaginary character that I wish I still believed in today is Santa Clause. When my father finally broke the news to me that Santa wasn't real I thought he was crazy. Then I started the think about the odds of one man flying around the world in one night giving every child a present. Thos chances are slim to none. He is my favorite character because he repesents the Christmas holiday. Christmas is the best time of year in my opinion. Everybody comes together as a family to celebrate the gift of giving. Santa is a very important symbol of the Christmas spirit.
